We are moving!! Ryan has been talking about moving to a bigger house and into a better neighborhood for quite a while now. With the interest rates flirting with record lows, we just couldn't pass up the opportunity.
Ryan had our home built when he was 21 years old, we were not even dating then. I've now lived in this house for almost 8 years, and it has become my home. There are so many memories that these walls hold. I know that we will make many more memories in our new home, but it is bitter sweet nonetheless. I love our little neighborhood, the quick walk to the park down the street, the convenience to all of the new shopping centers that are just around the corner, and our sweet neighbors. Good neighbors are sometimes hard to find and we will definitely miss ours. We have watched their daughter grow up to a sweet little kindergartner, and they even came to the hospital when Garrett was born. However, we do live in a college town and our neighborhood has turned in to a haven for college students looking to rent a house with all of their fraternity brothers. We are constantly battling the noise of multiple dogs barking due to our zero lot line. The sound reverberates off of the houses so bad that we can hear the people who live behind us talking in their back yard if we are in our bedroom, so you can imagine the racket created by dogs barking for hours on end. There are constantly cars parked in front of our house so that our guests, and sometimes we, do not have a place to park.
We knew we wanted to stay in the same city, but we wanted to move away from the University in hopes to avoid the "college crowd." There are not a whole lot of places to build in our our city, and we knew we wanted to build a new home, so we extended our search into surrounding cities. We found two neighborhoods that we liked. Our dilemma was that we loved the location of one neighborhood, but could build a larger home in the other. We finally decided to go with the location. We will never have neighbors behind us! There is a small creek that runs behind our lot. Someday we want to put in a rod iron fence that will open up the view to the woods. There were only a few lots left in this neighborhood, so we felt like this place was meant for us. It is right down the road from a brand new elementary school, and just a few miles away from a new middle school that is being built. There is also a private park right down the street. We will live on a 1/2 cul-de-sac. Ryan will only have about a 5 min. drive to work. Ha! I will be closer to work, but I still have to drive back into town to take Garrett to daycare. So technically, my drive will be longer. We love his school, so it is definitely worth the drive! It will come in handy on basketball/football nights when I am coming home late after a game. We made our final decision the week before Christmas and the lot was officially ours.
For anyone who know my husband, they know that once he sets his mind on something, it has to happen NOW! We started cleaning and decluttering to get our house on the market right after Christmas. The decorations were stored away, the house was spotless, and the For Sale sign went up in our yard last Friday. Three showings and two days later, our house sold! I have to admit, our little house IS pretty cute.
We were hoping that we would be able to lease the house back from the buyer for a few months since our house will not be finished until May. Unfortunately, the buyer wants to move in Feb. 1st. So, we are homeless!! Not really, but kind of. We have been frantically looking for an apartment and storage for all of our things. Our parents are willing to let us stay with them, but they live far from our jobs and Garrett's school. We would have at least an hour and a half drive each way. We also had some sweet friend who offered to let us move in with them for a few months. Bless their hearts! We are pretty sure we found an apartment yesterday, and will be packing up soon and starting to move things into storage starting this weekend. Ryan has already started taking things to the dump and enlisted friends to help start moving things. I am so worried about my dining room furniture and china getting damaged!!
We have had the chance to have our first showroom visit to pick out the fun stuff. Here is a phone snapshot of the color of the cabinets, the tile, and granite color. I'm so excited about having a huge closet, and more room in the house. But most of all, I am thrilled to have more natural light!! Our current house has very few windows, and is so dark. I am always complaining about how dark the house is, but not anymore! The new house will have tons of windows in the main areas to let in that sweet, sweet light.
We have a long road ahead, but it will all be worth it. Look for the new "McMansion" coming in May!
